Graphical Hedonic Games of Bounded Treewidth
نویسنده
چکیده
Hedonic games are a well-studied model of coalition formation, in which selfish agents are partitioned into disjoint sets and agents care about the make-up of the coalition they end up in. The computational problems of finding stable, optimal, or fair outcomes tend to be computationally intractable in even severely restricted instances of hedonic games. We introduce the notion of a graphical hedonic game and show that, in contrast, on classes of graphical hedonic games whose underlying graphs are of bounded treewidth and degree, such problems become easy. In particular, problems that can be specified through quantification over agents, coalitions, and (connected) partitions can be decided in linear time. The proof is by reduction to monadic second order logic. We also provide faster algorithms in special cases, and show that the extra condition of the degree bound cannot be dropped. Finally, we note that the problem of allocating indivisible goods can be modelled as a hedonic game, so that our results imply tractability of finding fair and efficient allocations on appropriately restricted

Towards Structural Tractability in Hedonic Games
Hedonic games are a well-studied model of coalition formation, in which selfish agents are partitioned into disjoint sets, and agents care about the make-up of the coalition they end up in. The computational problem of finding a stable outcome tends to be computationally intractable, even after severely restricting the types of preferences that agents are allowed to report. We investigate a str...
متن کاملGames on Graphs The Complexity of Pure Nash Equilibria
In this thesis, we analyze the problem of computing pure Nash equilibria in succinctly representable games, with a focus on graphical and action-graph games. While the problem is NP-Complete for both models, it is known to be polynomial time computable when restricted to games of bounded treewidth. We propose a dynamic programming approach for computing pure Nash equilibria of graphical games. ...
متن کاملPure Nash equilibria: complete characterization of hard and easy graphical games
We consider the computational complexity of pure Nash equilibria in graphical games. It is known that the problem is NP-complete in general, but tractable (i.e., in P) for special classes of graphs such as those with bounded treewidth. It is then natural to ask: is it possible to characterize all tractable classes of graphs for this problem? In this work, we provide such a characterization for ...
متن کاملTime and Parallelizability Results for Parity Games with Bounded Tree and DAG Width
Parity games are a much researched class of games in NP ∩ CoNP that are not known to be in P. Consequently, researchers have considered specialised algorithms for the case where certain graph parameters are small. In this paper, we study parity games on graphs with bounded treewidth, and graphs with bounded DAG width. We show that parity games with bounded DAG width can be solved in O(n · k · (...
متن کاملBayesian Inference in Treewidth-Bounded Graphical Models Without Indegree Constraints
We present new polynomial time algorithms for inference problems in Bayesian networks (BNs) when restricted to instances that satisfy the following two conditions: they have bounded treewidth and the conditional probability table (CPT) at each node is specified concisely using an r-symmetric function for some constant r. Our polynomial time algorithms work directly on the unmoralized graph. Our...
